How to make it
- 1Choose your essential oil blend
Decide on your scent and therapeutic focus before mixing. Lavender + frankincense for anti-ageing. Geranium + ylang ylang for floral and balancing. Peppermint + eucalyptus for invigorating. The carrier oils are neutral — the essential oils define the experience.
- 2Pour carrier oils into the bottle
Using a small funnel, pour jojoba, sweet almond, and rosehip oil into your dark glass bottle. No mixing is needed yet — they will combine naturally.
- 3Add vitamin E oil
Add vitamin E oil — this acts as a natural antioxidant that extends the shelf life of the other oils, particularly rosehip which goes rancid quickly.
- 4Add essential oils
Add your chosen essential oils — no more than 20 drops total for a 200ml bottle (that is a 1% dilution, appropriate for full body use). For face use, reduce to 6–8 drops.
- 5Cap, label, and store
Cap the bottle tightly, turn it gently to combine, and label with the date and contents. Store in a cool, dark spot. Gently roll the bottle before each use to redistribute the oils.
For a body oil, a 1% essential oil dilution (about 20 drops per 100ml of carrier oil) is the safe and effective standard for adults. Going higher does not improve results and increases the risk of sensitisation — particularly for oils like cinnamon, clove, or citrus, which can cause reactions at high concentrations. For facial use, keep to 0.5% (about 6 drops per 100ml).
Key ingredient benefits
- Add argan oil for a more luxurious, anti-ageing formula suited to mature skin
- Replace rosehip with sea buckthorn oil (just 1 tsp) for a powerful antioxidant boost — it turns the oil orange
- Use only jojoba and add neem oil (1 tsp) for an antimicrobial body oil suited to acne-prone skin
- Add 10 drops of rose absolute (not rose otto — too expensive) for an incredibly luxurious floral body oil
- Make a citrus blend with bergamot + sweet orange + lemon for a morning energising oil
