How to make it

  1. 1
Measure all ingredients into a bowl

No cooking, no toasting required — just combine. The ratio of seeds to aromatics to salt is what makes this blend work. Measure carefully for the first batch, then adjust to taste for subsequent ones.

  2. 2
    Mix thoroughly

Stir well to ensure even distribution. The different sizes and densities of the ingredients mean they settle unevenly — thorough mixing at this stage means a more consistent blend from the jar.

  3. 3
Transfer to a small glass jar

Pour into a small glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. A jar with a wide mouth makes it easier to pinch and sprinkle. Label with the date.

  4. 4
Optional — lightly toast before storing

For a more intensely nutty flavour, toast the sesame and poppy seeds briefly in a dry pan for 2–3 minutes until just fragrant before mixing. Cool completely before combining with the other ingredients.

The five-ingredient logic

The reason this blend is so universally good is that it hits five distinct flavour notes simultaneously: nuttiness (sesame), earthiness (poppy), pungency (garlic), sweetness (onion), and salinity (flaky salt). Each one is distinct enough to register separately but balanced enough that none overpowers. This is why it works on sweet things (avocado toast, yoghurt) as well as savoury ones — it is inherently balanced.
