Turmeric Glow Face Mask

A traditional kitchen-to-face treatment that predates the entire skincare industry. Turmeric brightens and reduces inflammation, honey moisturises and fights bacteria, curd gently exfoliates with lactic acid. Together they do more than most expensive face masks.

How to make it

  1. 1
    Start with clean skin

Cleanse your face before applying the mask. The mask works by direct contact with skin — any residue of sunscreen, makeup, or oil reduces its effectiveness.

  2. 2
Mix ingredients in a small bowl

Combine turmeric, honey, and curd in a small bowl. Stir well until you have a smooth, uniform paste with no lumps of dry turmeric. If using lemon juice, add it last.

  3. 3
Apply evenly with a brush or fingers

Apply a thin, even layer over your face avoiding the eye area. A small cosmetic brush gives more control. Fingers work equally well — just be careful not to get turmeric in your eyes.

  4. 4
    Leave for 10–15 minutes

Set a timer. The curd's lactic acid works within 10 minutes. Turmeric staining increases with longer contact time — do not leave for more than 20 minutes.

  5. 5
    Rinse with warm water

Rinse off with warm (not hot) water. Any yellow tinge from the turmeric will fade within 30–60 minutes. If concerned, follow with a gentle wipe with a cotton pad dampened with toner or micellar water.

About the turmeric staining

Turmeric temporarily stains skin a slight yellow — this is curcumin, the same compound responsible for its anti-inflammatory benefits. The tint fades within 30–60 minutes of rinsing as the curcumin oxidises on skin. If you need stain-free skin immediately after, add a few drops of lemon juice to the mask — the acidity reduces the staining effect without reducing the turmeric's benefits.

Why it works

Key ingredient benefits

Turmeric — curcumin is a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, reduces redness and brightens
Raw honey — antimicrobial (especially Manuka), humectant that draws moisture into skin
Curd / yoghurt — lactic acid gently exfoliates, probiotic content supports skin microbiome
Lemon juice — vitamin C brightens, mild AHA action — use sparingly if skin is sensitive
Variations & customisations
  • Replace lemon juice with rose water for a gentler, fragrant version suited to sensitive skin
  • Add ½ tsp besan (chickpea flour) for a more exfoliating, traditional Ubtan-style mask
  • Use Manuka honey instead of regular honey for significantly stronger antimicrobial action
  • Add 1 tsp aloe vera gel for extra soothing properties, particularly good for sunburned skin
  • Substitute curd with coconut milk for a vegan version that is equally effective
